Royal Mastodon Society
is an art space, workshop, research lab, showroom and event venue. The founders, Roy Montibon and Julie
Tumblety are both working artists. Their love of exceptional artist loft studio spaces began a decade ago
in Downtown Los Angeles, with the
San Fernando Building, a
century-old Renaissance Revival building in the Old Bank District.
Since moving to New Mexico in 2006, they have purchased and renovated three historic buildings, (circa 1865,
1896, and 1918), into live/work studio spaces. Two of those buildings are listed on the
National Register of Historic Places. They also consult with other renovators regarding State and Federal
tax credits for historic renovation work.
Roy and Julie recently launched www.photo-graphic-image-arts.com,
"five unstructured and unrepentant ruminations on art, vision, signs, symbols, graphic depiction and photographic imagery".
This is the first part of a series of online lectures, workshops and symposia titled, Adventures in Art, Photography
and Design.
Roy has been an educator for over 24 years, having pioneered courses in computer graphics for creative
professionals, (non-engineers in the design and film industries), at
UCLA Extension at a time when very few such
courses existed anywhere in the U.S. Roy has organized and moderated special programs, including international
design syposia, developed curricula and taught Media Arts, Information Architecture,
Experience Design and Creative
Process courses to over 6,000 students and design professionals.
